Rock ‘N’ Roll Halloween
Halloween and rock ‘n’ roll. At times it might seem that Halloween and rock ‘n’ roll would not lend themselves to readily identifiable costumes but all it takes is really a fast glance at some of the leading rock acts through the years, and also the truth of the connections turns very clear. Just to begin, people can gown up as members of the band Kiss (assuming they know someone who can create the correct make-up for that band)!!!
Gown up as a British school boy with shorts, jacket along with a cap and carry a guitar and it is Angus Young from AC/DC come to life. Discover the correct psychedelic outfits from the 60s and turn into Eric Clapton (carrying a guitar), Jack Bruce, (carry a bass) or Ginger Baker (it helps to have a lengthy red-haired wig on this one – plus carry the drumsticks)!!!
David Bowie had created a number of rock personas through the years that could be Halloween costumes for that unique celebration. Ziggy Stardust led to Aladdin Sane to Diamond Dog towards the Thin White Duke. Even though it may not be simple to discover some costumes to turn out to be those characters, if the costume is discovered, people will acknowledge it (at least people of a particular age group would most likely acknowledge them.
Even though not within the rock ‘n’ roll genre, it would be fairly simple to gown up as Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash for that Halloween costume celebration. To become Willie, get some blue jeans, a t-shirt and bandana along with a lengthy reddish grey wig with braids and carry a beat up acoustic guitar. To become Johnny Cash, get a black shirt, black slacks, black socks and black shoes – after all, The Man In Black wouldn’t be wearing white shoes would he?
Discover a gold lame jump and turn out to be a later era Elvis Presley. Discover an early ‘60s Carnaby Street and turn out to be one of the Beatles. If the hair is no longer visible on the head, get a wig that comes down past the shoulders, a flannel shirt and blue jeans and turn out to be Jerry Garcia reincarnated. The correct top hat and tuxedo and it is Leon Russell from the early ‘70s. The correct Mardi Gras outfit and Mac Rebennack turns into Dr John.
Nevertheless, no matter what rock ‘n’ roll artist or group from any era that’s the costume of option, the one thing lacking for most individuals will be the actual expertise that allowed the artist to show their flamboyance. The “character” they became was generally ancillary towards the expertise and it was the expertise that made them famous sufficient that people attempt to turn out to be them, even if only for that Halloween costume celebration.

R&P, why aren’t bass solos or drum solos in songs as often as guitar solos?
This question has always perplexed me. Why are guitar solos so much more common than drums or bass in songs (well, rock songs more specifically). The only answer I can think of is that the drums and bass are the most important parts of a band and need to keep the time, but still why can’t they get some love? So, why do you think bass solos and drum solos aren’t as common?
My song of the day
MQ: what do you think of my song of the day?
MQ2: what do you think of this drum solo? (it’s my latest)
MQ3: what’s your halloween costume for this year?
MQ4: favourite horror film
Because guitar is better as a melodic voice in itself, even if most guitar solos aren’t great. The bass is too low to be distinguishable enough and drum solos are by and large just interruptions of the song (the drum solo in “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck is one exception, as it is so well done it manages to be an interesting melodic voice in itself, and the timbre is perfect).
MQ: I dig NIN, good stuff.
MQ2: It’s fine I’m just not a fan of drum solos.
MQ3: I think people should go as naked people and aliens this year. The naked people would be making a statement about how nudity shouldn’t be more discouraged than violence (which many costumes represent) and the aliens just because good old, classic style aliens need to be brought back.
MQ4: The Birds, maybe. Hitchcock destroys all these modern hack horror screenwriters (although, I’m not sure if Hitchcock is actually referred to as horror, more “psychological thriller”, which I like. “Horror” is a dumb name, and I only might ever enjoy some of them as comedies (which is their intended purpose now anyway)).
